Argentina is famous for its wineries, unfortunately for visitors to Buenos Aires, most of the wineries are in Mendoza, a 10+ hour drive by car or bus. Luckily, I’ve got some new options for you to enjoy some of Argentina’s wine during your summer, or anytime, beach break from Buenos Aires.

This January, Trapiche delighted East Coast wine drinkers by opening up a winery in Chapadmalal, right between Mar del Plata and Miramar, two very popular summer beach destinations for Buenos Aires residents. The winery, Mar & Pampa, is located less than 10 km from the Atlantic Ocean, just a 5 hour drive from Buenos Aires. It is considered an experimental winery as they are one of the few who have planted vines on the Atlantic coast of Argentina. As a costal winery, they are focusing on white varietals and classic coastal red wines like Pinot Noir.

They offer daily tours, by prior reservation, in English or Spanish which include a wine tasting. There are several different tasting options to choose from, and the tour includes a walk around the vineyard and winery operations. As you explore the vines and the tanks, they will tell you about the challenges of growing wines on the Atlantic coast. Afterwards you get to sample the fruits of their labor in their airy and modern tasting hall. If you like the wines, you can purchase them on the spot at their wine shop, in addition to the Mar & Pampa brand they offer Trapiche wines. They are planning to open a restaurant, so keep an eye out for future beach lunches!

How to Get There
You can easily access Avenida Antártida Argentina from either Mar del Plata or Miramar. From Mar del Plata, start off on Avenida Independencia, which turns into Avenida Peralta Ramos and then Avenida Antártida Argentina. Smply turn left when you see the Mar & Pampa sign, the winery is just up the road on your right. From Miramar, take Calle 9 up to Calle 83 (unsigned, right after the park) and take a right that turns into Avenida Antártida Argentina. There was no sign for Mar & Pampa from this direction, instead look for the sign for Estancia Santa Isabel and turn right there. It’s about a half hour from either city.

Getting to the winery is pretty easy, but the road the winery is on is very rough, I strongly advise only using the back road, Avenida Antártida Argentina and not the coastal road Ruta 11 to get to the winery. Although it’s only about 8kms along the road from Ruta 11, your car will thank you. Don’t worry, despite missing the coastal scenery, the back road is very pretty, and if you go during mid-summer your drive will be full of bright yellow sunflower fields!

Espacio Estancia Mendoza
If you’re looking for a winery experience in Mar del Plata, head to Espacio Estancia Mendoza. This wine bar is also a newer addition to Mar del Plata but conveniently located just one block from the Güemes shopping strip. While you can’t tour their winery, they have several different wine inspired atmospheres for you to enjoy your wine, you can sip it out on the patio, indoor at the bar, or in their lounge area.

They offer happy hour specials, but the prices are great even if you visit at other times. Enjoy a classic snack like empanadas or have a meal, and experience a little bit of Mendoza while taking a break from your beach or shopping fun. They hold regular art and wine events and they have an adjoining wine shop if you’re looking to pick up some of the wines or artisanal products you tried. Do note the shop closes before the restaurant!

Both locations are open year round, so if you’re like me and prefer to visit the Atlantic beaches during the less crowded seasons don’t worry, you can still enjoy these wine experiences no matter when you go!
